Screen dimming issue

Recently I ran into a problem with screen dimming on my late 2011 17" mbp.

When I dim the screen down for night uses or battery running I can dim it down to 80% any lower will turn the screen black(default battery setting means a black screen aswel). Has anybody got this issue before or is it a simple smc reset problem?
