Let me preface this by saying how much I love my iPhone. I'm typing this right now from it actually.

I don't want to look for problems but at the same time I want to protect my investment. I found two issues through normal use.

1) this thing gets warm, and actually HOT when 3G is on. It being in a case might not help but I was wondering if this was normal.

2)(and the one Im most worried about): whenever the screen turns off when I lock the phone or after being idle, it doesn't just turn off likes normal LCD, it flickers off like when an older TV turns off (almost looks like the image is being squashed into a thin black line in the center of the screen). Is this normal?

1) My iPhone is not in a case, just transparent film and I'm not in a 3G area. It gets warm, but not hot.

Search the forums to see if others have this issue.

2) The black line that appears for a second after the screen turns off is normal.
