Screen going black, computer stays on

I have a 2.5 yr old OSX .. and lately with SKYPE, iTUNES and two separate hardisks attached..the screen will go black without notice..while the computer stays on. At times it will leave one line of text outlined in white. This is now a daily occurance. I'm wondering if Skype plus iTunes can overload or trigger something. Am going to try opening another account to see if works differently. I have to manually shut off and restart. My computer is still under guarantee , but am unsure if erratic screen failures are valid request for intervention from repair folks.
