The left-hand hinge connecting the screen and the body pops out whenever I close the laptop—leaving the "lid" crooked while closed. The computer itself works perfectly fine, but the problem is getting worse with time and it's gotten to the point now that I'm afraid from closing the lid altogether.

I'm not sure how this happened but a bump or two was most likely involved. I don't have AppleCare (any longer). That, coupled with the fact that Apple support advises me to order a whole new screen at a cost of $1000+, has me in a bit of a pinch. (Bought to laptop used for a little more than that).

Anyone encountered a similar issue before? Ideas on how this might be solved without having to replace the otherwise working screen?

Thanks a million.
