On my mac today the icons that I have drap onto the desktop dont show up. But the name is under them and its like part of the icon is there. Does anyone know what my be the problem?

You running Lion? It happens to me from time to time. Just a glitch in the matrix.
If you are running SL you may have accidentally pinched them too small to see. Try to pinch and zoom it.
