hi, I have a 15" macbook pro (2011) and the issue i'm having recently is that every so often i'm getting a long white strip coming on and off...
when I got this mac it had a note on it to not perform any PRAM. any help would be greatly
appreciated...

That model is famous for a failing GPU. Sounds like that is what's happening. Usually requires replacing the logic board. With a machine that old it's not worth it. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find someone who can do special soldering and repair it for you.

Yes, I agree. It is a textbook for GPU falling. You might find a 3rd party repair shop willing to fix the motherboard, but it will likely cost more than 300USD (which is about what the computer is worth). You should save your files on a pendrive/drive/cloud and prepare to buy a new machine, unfortunately. I am sorry.

Follow this thread:Force 2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 with failed AMD GPU to ALWAYS use Intel integrated GPU (EFI variable fix)

Hmm that is interesting the note says to never perform any PRAM reset. I have a 2011 15 MBP as well and it was going pink, so I disabled the AMD video card

Been working fine for almost 2 years now although several months ago I made the boneheaded move to update the OS (high sierra) with a security update, lol, I had to reinstall the OS and re-do it. Basically I just use 2011 mbp as an Instagram photo scraper, backup to the cloud servers, media player and web browsing. I disabled OS updates. Still working great with 16gb RAM and 1tb SSD.
