So my friend wants me to see what is wrong with there phone so I figured I would ask the pros. They have an iPhone xr and their problem is their phone won't let them swipe up. It doesn't do anything if they do that but it will let them swipe side to side. Then whenever they are typing, it will touch other buttons instead of the ones they are actually hitting? Is there a setting that could be changed or is the screen just broken?

The term for what you're describing is "ghost touch" and obviously it's non responsive to inputs. They need to get the display replaced.
