Screen not turn off when listening to voicemail?

So, does the screen on the iPhone not turn off when help up to your ear when listening to voicemail like it does when you're on an actual call? If not, this seems like an oversight on Apple's part. If it's supposed to, then something's wrong with my iPhone.

I nearly deleted some voicemails while listening to one!

Thanks for clearing this up!
