Screen not turning off when listening to voicemail?

Isn't the screen supposed to turn off when listening to voicemail (with the phone up against your ear)? My ear keeps touching the screen and messing it up. I'm pretty sure on previous ios's the screen shut off. Or is this an iPhone 6 issue?
