I have had an ongoing issue trying to get my MBP display right...

I had a "shiny patch" on the left edge of my screen. I took it to the autohorised dealer (Jennings) in York, half an hours drive from me, to ask them to look at it, as my MBP is covered under Applecare.

They agreed to replace the screen, so I left the laptop with them and in a few days the screen was fitted. I drove to collect it, turned it on, and low and behold there was the same issue, in a different part of thescreen, clear as day!

They called he engineer and he agreed, and said the only option was to order a new screen. I needed this laptop for work so I said to call me when the screen came in so I could drop it off.

I took the laptop home, discovered the following:

  1. The 2 screws at the base of the display were missing
  2. There was a mark on the top, next to the hinge, which was not there before
  3. There were gaps around the casing edge (again, not there before)

I emailed pictures of my issues to the owner of the place and he agreed to order a new top part (that sits around the keyboard) to go with the new display.

This is ok by me, but why on earth did THEY not spot these issues?

So... parts come in, I drive to take them the laptop... leave it with them then go to collect next day. I am in a hurry, so just give it a quick test... looks ok but a little bright. I figured this was the brightness setting/color profile, so I calibrated it at home and low and behold it was faulty. If I looked at a black image, the bottom right was grey and the top left was inverted.

I should have spotted that in the shop I suppose, but then again so should they! The button for the trackpad was also a bit intermitant.. ok, but harder to spot, that one, but still... not good.

So... another display ordered and a new top section ordered (the button is attached to this).

I drop it off... go to collect again, this time all looks good... I checked the screen, black is black again, no visible marks, button works... bingo, happy!

So, I am doing some work over the weekend and the image had a black section in the middle... at this point I notice a small line, like 4 pixels in a row lit... not white but like a grey colour. Sure enough, they wont disappear.

I reset the computer, used the pixel massaging (flashing colours thing) that I found on the net... nothing would shift them.

It's really bugging me now... I have no idea what to do... I have spent a small fortune in petrol going too and from this store, and I really can't afford the time to keep doing this (they are not open at the weekend). The original display did have a rather obvious "shiny patch", but it was at the edge of the screen. This small line is right in the middle of the screen, a totally more obvious place.

I don't want to take it to the same place again as their quality control is obviously not up to standard, but my nearest Apple Store is even further away. I also can't afford to be without my laptop for days on end.

Any suggestions? Do Apple have a sympathetic ear for these things? I'm not even sure what they CAN do, as I know they don't do on-site repairs. :(
