I am wondering what people's thoughts were on the tradeoff between screen protection via a tempered glass protector vs the depth of the lip on a case around the iPhone.

for my last several iPhones (6, 7, and now XS), i've used a tempered screen protector on the phone along with a "mid-level protection case" which as minor lip to allow for the phone to be lay down without coming into contact with a flat surface even with a 0.25mm screen protector on.

fast forward to my iPhone XS which originally sported a MaxBoost 0.25mm protector and Caudabe Sheath. this seemed to have a little less lip than my previous phones, but enough. yesterday, i installed a iCarez 2.5D protector which is 0.33mm thick. the jump in thickness was noticeable enough so that now i wonder if i have enough "lip" on my case. there still is one, but its definitely less than i'm used to.

my question for discussion is this:

How much edge lip/table lift is enough?

it seems that the thicker screen protector should provide better screen protection, but that comes at the expense of having the screen come in contact with an irregular surface (in the event of a "face plant" by the phone) in the first place.

what's the ideal balance here?
