Are they important? I have a iPhone 7 and fitted one today but have a slight speck of dust on the very corner which is bugging me

I used to use one religiously but I decided not to use one when I got my X in 2017. I haven't had any issues except for the inevitable micro scratches that can only be seen under bright light and at certain angles which doesn't bother me at all. If you're rough on your phone or obsess over the screen then I'd suggest a screen protector

If they are scratch resistant to some degree I’ll leave it

problem is the screen protectors always get a bit of annoying dust underneath whilst trying to fit them

While some people like them, I don't and I've never used one on 5 different iPhones. The current iPhone I'm using is several years old (not my newest, but my biggest) and the glass looks fine enough to me. It gets smudged soon enough with finger prints throughout the day that a micro scratch isn't visible. I honestly never have examined any of my iPhone screens carefully enough to see if there's micro scratches. There probably are some - but I've never noticed them

Wouldn't use a £1000 phone without one, end of.

Yes, I agree the handset looks nicer without one, but I'd rather put up with the slight reduction in aesthetics, and know that it's not going to drive me insane if I accidentaly scratch it.

Put it this way: my mum and my granddad have both dropped their iPhones. They both had a screen protector on. The protector shattered but the screen didn’t. Well worth the £5 spent.

If you’re prone to dropping your phone I’d definitely put a screen protector on. I’d rather spend another £5 than £300 odd for a new screen!

It’s all based on preference to you and your usage. I like keeping my devices pristine, so I always put screen protectors on them to keep them nicer longer. I hate when I see scratches on the actual screen of the device so I prevent that from happening to the best of my ability. My 2018 11” iPad Pro has a screen protector and my Note 9 has a screen protector. I ordered an 11 Pro Max that will be coming in the mail on Monday and the first thing I’m doing before I even turn it on is put a screen protector. Now, the screens are durable to an extent where they can withstand daily life and not get as scratched up. I just like putting one on for a peace of mind.

Also, if you tend to drop your phone a lot, I would definitely recommend one as the protector will take the hit before it goes to the phone. In the end, it’s up to you!

take a hot shower for 5-10 mins, make sure no spec of dust on screen, peel and add the screen protector, the mist in the atmosphere in the bathroom will drag down any air borne particles.
also don't dry off with a towel just yet cause towel has micro particles that will comtaminate the air again.

I’ve never successfully fitted a screen protector without it looking awful, or getting some kind of bubble/dust underneath it. It always looks worse than any micro-scratch might look. So I didn’t bother with my current (original) SE. Not sure if I will with my new SE. Probably not.

Before my original SE, which was my first iPhone, I had a variety of Android phones and the last one I had came pre-fitted with a screen protector. Makes me wonder why manufacturers don’t fit screen protectors to all phones as standard. They must be able to do a better job than the end user and, if the end user doesn’t want it, they only have to peel it off.

Surely it would make sense for one to come pre-fitted?

ESR ones come with a frame that makes fitting easy, never had any issues with their products.

However for the 6/7/8/SE the screen protectors don’t quite go right to the edge of the screen which can be annoying for some.

Would never take a phone outside without one

Same! I ordered my 11 Pro Max about a week and a half ago. I got it in the mail on Monday, the 20th. I still have not unboxed it because the only thing that hasn’t come in the mail yet is my screen protector. I already have my cases ready, but I never use any of my (expensive) items without a screen protector. Kudos to those who use their devices without one or without a case - I could never do that and I never will. I take care of my devices and I’m not clumsy with them, but it gives me a peace of mind for that “just in case” moment.
