Screen resolution on startup changes back to previous setting

I have OSX 10.5.8
Mac Pro
ATI HD 2600 Card
VMWare Fusion 2 / Windows XP

I recently purchased a 24 inch monitor and changed the resolution to 1920x1200 in the display preferences. After I shut down and restart the resolution goes back to a previous setting. Any ideas what to do?
