Screen saver problem. Help?

I got my MacBook Pro almost a year ago, and I never used the screen saver because I would just close it when I wasn't using it. But now I'm starting to leave it open, and I've noticed that no matter what the 'Start screen saver' time is at, the screen saver will never start. I have hot corners set up, but when I use it, the screen saver will come on for about 3 slides and then go off even though I haven't touched the computer.
I've also noticed that my computer won't go into sleep mode by itself even though my energy saver settings are at 10 minutes.

Anyone know how to fix this?

No, I'm only using the trackpad

Well, I kind of fixed it. I had to password protect it. But it still won't go into sleep or the the screen saver by itself. I need to use hot corners for it.
