Screen sharing turns iMac screen on

I've allowed screen sharing on my iMac so that I can control it from my GF's macbook - however when I hook up, the screen comes on and everything I do through screen sharing is visible through the iMac.

This happens if you use VNC too... any ideas what I can do to stop it?

Not sure if there's anything you can do to stop it - it does the same on my Mac Pro but the easy answer there is to switch the monitors off
