Screen stays off when unplugged?

As it says above the screen on my iPad mini 4 stays off when I unplug it from the charge cable.
Comes on when I press the home button and everything appears to be working fine -works great in fact. it's fully charged also.
This occurring to anyone else?
Never happened with my 2 previous iPad mini models.
