I have a 1st generation apple watch whose screen does not respond to touch. I've tried hard resetting a few time. It charges and the buttons work fine. There is a thin crack across the full length of the top of the screen. I am guessing I am going to need the screen replaced, but am open to suggestions for other possibilities or of where I can buy a replacement screen for a 1st generation apple watch. Additionally, there is no phone paired to it and it is reset to factor defaults. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sounds like you have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix. Their price to fix will exceed the worth of the hardware therefore it is not worth fixing. Maybe ch Carter and Associates out a nice new AW3.
