So, I upgraded my dad's MBP from Mavericks to High Sierra. Suddenly, the display colors were all washed out. I tried many web searches, calibrating several times, reinstalling from internet recovery, and after many hours nothing was working. I had almost decided to take the MBP in for service.

I did one more search and finally found the solution: Display Contrast in Accessibility Display settings had magically changed to 'Maximum'

Many thanks to this website/post: https://tidbits.com/article/17707

I had same thing and logged into another User and set Display > Brightness was set to lowest. (This setting wasn't showing in my regular User as lowest) Somehow this fixed in my regular User as well.
