I am about to buy either the $999 MB or the hi-end MM and I was looking into reusing my iMac G5 screen rather than spending an extra 500 quid on a Apple display that's either glossy or doesn't support HDCP. Besides, I just can't afford it right now. My plan was always either to get a 23-inch or maybe even 30-inch if the minis can keep handling it, and just keep swapping out minis as soon as they're released but as the prices just went thru the roof (in £s), I've decided to wait and see if the next one has bluray (probably) and still supports dual display (probably not).
The problem is that I use my mac for colour work as I work in film post-production and so a 13inch monitor is probably too small to tide me over as both my living room mac, and my work mac. So I figured maybe after all this time that I've been moaning about planned obsolescence and apple's rather ungreen attitude to what my iMac is good for now that its rather outdated for my purposes, somebody might have figured out a way to make my iMac a display.
Apparently my best option is screenrecycler or some model of EyeTV. The video on the screenrecycler website with the washed out colours on the drone display and the fact that it works over ethernet tells me that there is no way I can use that software for viewing images I need for work, altho I can't tell for sure. Its just a QT and 100MBPs is an "ok" stream rate. I could always use the 13-inch as a viewer, and the 20-inch for everything else, of course, but I'd prefer to do it the other way around. Does anyone know how the EyeTV method works/looks or if there is a better solution?
It is infuriating to think that I have a perfectly good 20"ACD stuck in my iMac G5 but can't make full use of it as I am now.
