I have the new MacBook Air 15”. When I’m working at home I use an external monitor and an external keyboard and mouse.

When I use the external monitor I hade only two choices for my MacBook Air screen. It’s use it as an extended monitor or as a mirror to the external display. I’m afraid of ghost screen or burn in screen for my Macbook. Is it not possible to have a screensaver on or a dark screen on my Macbook when I use an external display?

I don't have an external keyboard or mouse, so just turn the brightness down to minimum if I don't want my (Intel 2020) MBA screen on, although I usually leave it with Mail running full-screen. Not worried about "ghost screen" (whatever that is) or burn-in. I mean, if there was burn-in then my menubar would be etched on the screen by now!

As you have an external keyboard and mouse, can't you just close the lid on the laptop?

LCDs generally don't burn it, at least not permanently, like CRTs, plasmas, or OLEDs do. But using the laptop with its lid closed with turn the display off entirely.

Thanks for your replies! I have tried to have the laptop lid closed but then my external display also got dark. But now I tried to closed the lid when I have my charging cable pluged in. And yes now it works to close the lid. The problem is solved.
