Why?
because they are both from Michael Bay?

It's the same exact shot. The planes on the deck in the Transformers trailer are CGI.

No surprise here. Probably more common than you think. I swear I have seen Top Gun footage in other films and especially TV shows... I watched that movie a long when I was young and knew it by heart.

Dude I know! I've seen those dogfighting shots everywhere, even in Chinese fighter pilot movies. and that 1 shot of the plane getting hit by a missile is like the ultimate classic shot that's used all the time!

It really is quite common when the only stock footage available is from one or two movies.

When the TV show JAG was still in production they were having a heck of a time getting footage onboard carriers and the like. If you look at the first couple of seasons, everytime Harm goes up in a Tomcat, its a scene cut directly from Top Gun!
The Navy finally wised up and figured out that the show was casting the Navy in a good light and allowed the production crews onto active or mothballed ships to shoot the scenes.

What's surprising is... Wraith (from Halo One) and Star Wars I (the new one) have similar tanks, check those pictures.

Haha- I remember every time they showed a sub surfacing it was that same footage that looked like it was shot in the early eighties. I think it was originally from Hunt for the Red October...

I imagine it was used for the purpose of cutting the trailer, nothing more. I'd be greatly surprised if a mega-budget blockbuster would have to resort to stealing footage from an older mega-budget blockbuster.

That said, it makes me chuckle that the shot from Pearl Harbor actually looks more realistic.

<3 stock footage!

Not just stock either. I remember seeing the main characters of one TV show from the 80s walking across the scene of another 80s TV show, you wouldn't use lead characters in stock footage.

Actually, I think the image on top (Transformers) is the "real" one, where the one on bottom has been digitally edited. Look at the topmasts and the top of the island, there are radars and other comm gear missing in the Pearl Harbor shot that are there in both Transformers and real life.

There's also that shadow in Pearl Harbor's shot that would be a total pain to undo and interpolate actual hull shape from. The Pearl Harbor image also has a B-25 on deck...enough said.

Surely the question is: why are you watching Pearl Harbour? It is truly an abhorrence of a film.
