screenshots and desktop stacks are a mess

so this drives me crazy and appears to persist into monterey. when taking screenshots, desktop stacks will place the screenshot into either a "Screenshots" stack or an "Images" stack, totally at random, meaning all my screenshots are cluttered across two stacks for no reason.

does this happen to anyone else, or are there work arounds?
