Is this a proprietary set of screws or is there a screw driver I can pick up at the local hardware store?

I don't want to take it to an Apple store and have someone F with it in the back room. I'd rather tighten them up myself.

Mine makes a light crack, crack noise randomly.

You can find them doing a Google search. You need a size 5, and yes a security torx. I have seen just the bit for less than $1 with a few dollars shipping.

Is there any way for Apple to know that you opened up your MBA (and voided your warranty) by doing this?

This exact thing happened to mine. Genius tightened it, slipped, the screw heads got damaged a bit.

There were some other problems with my unit and it got replaced now.
