What do SD and SDXC cards do?

In other words what is that slot on the left side of my Macbook Pro for?
I understand they used to be used for unremarkable things like modems...

It seems they are relevant to those who connect their cameras up to their computer. Anything else?

Those cards are used in digital cameras and camcorders to store the photos and videos those devices take onto.
The slot is for inserting such SD or SDXC cards into it and copying the data off from them.

It has nothing to do with modems.

Maybe also have a look at Wikipedia or any other online resource explaining SD and SDXC cards.

like I see, macrumors has turned into an interactive google alternative. nice
