I'll be getting a new iMac, and am a little bummed about losing the SD card reader. I still need to use it from time to time.

Unfortunately, while also shopping for new USB hubs, I note that any hub that has a card reader is designed and styled for mobile use and/or festooned with a zillion different ports that I don't need with a desktop machine.

Or, there are card readers built into USB sticks that I would need to keep around and just plug it in when needed.

Is there any such thing as a card reader built into a USB hub (just USB) designed for use with a desktop machine? Failing that I'll probably go with the USB stick-style reader, but it's gonna be annoying to have another loose piece floating around.

It's hard to even find USB-C hubs that are intended for desktops; the vast majority are designed for use with laptops.
