My daughter would like an Apple Watch for running because she’s doing cross country right now. I was considering the latest SE but I’m wondering if I should try and convince her to wait a couple of weeks to see what’s coming out. Is there a chance the current gen will drop immediately in price and a new one announced at the September event, or is it currently anyone’s guess?

Buy it for her tomorrow from a place that has a 2 week return policy. Then, watch the event and determine if the “newer chip” and “better sensors” is worth returning it.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking that would be a smart play. I’m guessing nothing new on the SE front honestly. But wasn’t sure if I missed something.

Agreed.

I'm guessing that there will be a new SE.

what is apple's return policy on this stuff currently? any issues with returns if she buys it and wears it for a couple weeks and we do decide to return or exchange? i don't think i've actually bought directly from apple and done a return in ages. also, i'm likely to be using $50 in apple gift cards if i go through them.

You definitely want to check directly with Apple. Don't take the word of some random on the Internet. Return policies vary by country so what works in mine might be different in yours.

For US:

Standard Return Policy

There are a few important things to keep in mind when returning a product you purchased online from Apple:
  • You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it.
  • Only items that have been purchased directly from Apple, either online or at an Apple Retail Store, can be returned to Apple. Apple products purchased through other retailers must be returned in accordance with their respective returns and refunds policy.
  • Please ensure that the item you're returning is repackaged with all the cords, adapters and documentation that were included when you received it.

The $50 gift card will be refunded as an electronic gift card via email.

But tough call. Agreed, don't think anything new on the SE front. If anything, as mentioned by someone in a different thread, can see SE being new entry level, 7 mid-tier, 8 and 8 max new flagships. In line with how the phones sorta work (darn 11 still in the mix messing up my theory).

Might announce a Watch on 7th, but what if not available until October? What if supply constrained even on pre-order that Friday? What if a surprise an no announcement on the 7th?

SE currently fetches up to $105 for trade-in, so if buy an SE now, hang onto it until a new Watch is in hand, might be basically paying for two SEs when all said and done ($399-$105 + $279; assuming smaller case and full trade-in [though that might be lower trade-in due to smaller size]). Or buy now, return for refund on 7th, will be without for possibly a significant amount of time.

Me, I'd wait until the 7th to do anything unless someone else in the clan might want to inherit an SE.

Good advice. I was definitely thinking about the potential delays and the need for something now. The most recent SE is plenty new, and she’s not at all concerned about the latest and greatest or what the processor might be etc etc, so she’d likely be very happy with it. I mainly just want to make sure I’m not spending more than I need to while getting the most I can for that low price. I don’t expect the current SE will change in price, and there certainly isn’t likely to be anything cheaper. And I can’t imagine they’d release a new SE on the 7th that’s the same price as the current one but with better feature. So probably would be fine to buy now. Would still have the option to return it seems if something unexpected happened and we had any regrets.

Appreciate all the advice

BIG EDIT - I didn’t realize we were taking about watches here. I was talking about phones. Sorry!

I don’t want to steer anyone wrong here, but didn’t the SE just get refreshed in March? And that was with a $30 price increase. I don’t expect anything new from the SE at the iPhone 14 event. Not even a price drop. That’s just my $0.02.

I’m rocking the aforementioned SE right now. I’m content with it. It’s good for what it is.

EDIT - I reread your original post. So you’re also considering one of the other iPhones, maybe? Usually, the previous-gen iPhones drop by $100 when newer ones come out. If that happens, that would put the iPhone 13 mini at $600. Something to consider. And judging by the articles on MR as of late, it sounds like the non-pro iPhone 14’s will have the same SoC as the iPhone 13’s currently. If that pans out to be true, then you’d essentially be able to get still-modern hardware at $600 after the iPhone event.

The OP is talking about watches here.

Reading your post since your daughter does not care about the latest newest Apple Watch ⌚️ I would say go ahead and get it for her I have had the se for two years and I’m very happy with it I don’t see the point in get a new watch every year I think she will be just happy with the se in my opinion 😁👍🏻

Yeah, she just wants something sooner rather than later that let’s get track her runs with gps, and she won’t even know if something new comes out in two weeks that has a faster processor or whatever. It’s not like they’re going to release something that looks radically different, and I doubt they’re going to release some really awesome color that she’ll regret not having waited for. Will likely grab something in the next day or two and then see what comes out, but in all likelihood will keep what we get.
