When I tap in part of a filename in the top of any window, as a rule the file I'm looking for will pop up and I'm on my way. Lately this no longer happens. I have a file on the drive which I know the filename of, when I tap it in (files shown as listing, not icons) with 'This Mac' or 'the account' selected in the search criteria, nothing comes up - the contents of the window disappear. The same goes for Spotlight and when I do a Command-F boolean search.

Interestingly, when 'shared' is selected, the files on remote machines which match are shown. So something is somehow screwed with the search engine within the Finder on my local machine (iMac running 10.5.8).

I've re-started the Finder and also repaired the disk permissions to no avail. Before I delve further into this, does anyone have any idea what can be causing this and how it can be fixed?

Thank you in advance...

'Filename' is indeed selected, and nothing is selected in the privacy pane of the Spotlight preferences.
