Search feature - missing or omitted?

When narrowing any search by date, why is there only an option to look prospectively from a point in time?

When it comes to utilizing date criteria when searching:

• threads and posts can only be narrowed by "newer than"
• profile posts can only be narrowed by "newer than"
• conversations can only be narrowed by "started after"
• users can only be narrowed by "registered after"

Why? I'm really puzzled why a limitation like this would be built-in.

Isn't it something as simple as > and < in regards to calling data by date?
