I can search by faces in "Photos" for Mac and for iPad. So why not in my iPhone?

Additional question: is there a way to see how many untagged faces there are (like in good ol' iPhoto)?

You can search. Assuming you've enabled iCloud Photo Library on your phone, and it has synced your named faces from your Mac or iPad, you can search faces on iPhone by:
1. Opening Photos app on iPhone
2. Click on magnifying glass on top right
3. Type face name in search box

Works perfectly for me. Don't think you can find unnamed faces. Hoping that will be added in an update.

Yes, iCloud Photo Library is enabled on all my devices (one Mac, one iPad, one iPhone). I follow the steps you outlined. A search for a name that I know I already tagged returns the appropriate photos on my Mac and my iPad, but doesn't return anything on my iPhone. My photo library is fully synchronized on all my devices so I'm not sure why this is happening.

On iPhone, go to Settings/General/Spotlight Search. Is anything not checked? If so, you might want to check everything and then try Photos again. I know searching for tagged faces works for me, so it must be a settings issue or bug for you.
