I have two AirTags active, one in a keychain and one in a wallet. I was testing out Find nearby. I put the wallet in a room on the other side of my house and activated precision finding. I get this message:

"searching for a signal try moving to a different location"

The phone is about 25 feet away from the AirTag, separated by a couple of walls.

I sat the keychain with the AirTag next to it and after about 15 seconds, FindMy sees it. I took the AirTag out of the wallet to eliminate that. If I get closer to the wallet AirTag, it does eventually see it.

Does this mean that this AirTag is a dud? Also, can protective film affect the signal?

The ultrawideband tracking for the AirTag is pretty much line of sight only. The Find My tracking will get you to the general location, then the ultrawideband tracking will help you locate it when you're close. But a little coin battery is not going to send out a signal that can punch through multiple walls or floors.
