Searching for contacts with specific text

I am a novice user of iPhone 3G. I have more than 1000 contacts in it. I'd like to be able to search for all contacts that have specific text (in the names, address, telephone numbers, email or notes) in them. I used have such find capability in my Palm and I feel handicapped without it.

I'd appreciate advise.
