Searching in mail app

Am trying to understand how to limit the scope of a search in the mail app. Researching the web, it seems to indicate that I can 'select' a mailbox and then search will only look there, and that the top of the app will show me an option to search just that mailbox or all messages, but the only thing I see is 'all mailboxes', never an option to limit the scope.

Do I have a setting wrong somewhere?

To the right of the “all mailboxes” option is the “current mailbox” search option. Outside of the suggested searches that show underneath those two options, that is all you have with the stock mail app.
