I (and loads of others!) have a long running issue where I can't use Spotlight on a client Mac to search a shared folder (no matter how much mdutil jiggery-pokery!)

Had a revelation today when I realised the reason for this is that (on the server) Spotlight stores its index in the root of the drive and when you share a sub-folder, the client only has access to that sub-folder so can't use the server-side spotlight index. To test this I shared an external drive (of which the client Mac has total access to) and searching over the network works perfectly!

So... assuming I still want to share (and search!) a sub-folder rather than an external drive, is there a solution? Obviously I don't want the client to access the root of my main HDD. Can I force Spotlight on the client to index the network drive rather than trying (and failing) to access the spotlight index on the server? I have tried the spotlight privacy trick on the client which doesn't seem to do anything!

Any ideas?

EDIT: I can search the Server's Public folder... so either that folder is treated uniquely, or it's a permission issue (not that I can see a difference in the permissions)
