Here's the situation. My iMac can be dual booted to Windows 7 and Mac OS X SL. I want to partition it again for Lion, but it might corrupt Windows 7. SO what I did was back Windows 7 up onto an external.. but now what do I do? I mean, if I partition, then Win7 might be corrupted not even allowing me to access the backup SOFTWARE! So...? Thx in advance.

How about you install OS X Lion on the External, I believe OS X supports booting from external drives. Windows does not however.... Rather than risking corrupting Windows 7 on your internal drive if you install it on a different one I think would remove risk of that.

Correct. That is the best approach, and is also what I have done any time I have upgraded OS on a Mac. Install it first on an external and make sure it all works for me before installing it on the internal drive.
