second monitor problem

I was under the impression that any monitor could be used as an external monitor on an iMac. But I've hit a snag.

I took the Dell monitor from my old PC, connected it to my iMac with a MiniDisplay Port to VGA, turned on the extra monitor but all I get on the screen is a Dell Analog Input Self Test feature.

Also, the monitor does not show when I go to System Preferences > Display. I expected to get a window showing "arrangement" but all I get is info on my iMac monitor.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
