second screen on a i7?

I just got my i7 today, and it is pretty awesome, i picked up a mini display port to hdmi adaptor and hdmi cord to run my 24" monitor off this as well...

but the image on the second screen looks terrible, the adaptor i bought was not an apple brand. do i need to take this back and get the apple one? or is there something i need to do?

Check the display setting fro System Prefs. Play around with them and see if it helps
