Secureing a user area - external or internal

Due to the fact that a casual user is going on an business machine I want to move the home folder to somewhere safe and/or encrypted.

Ive tried moving the home folder to an external usb hard drive but that seems crazy slow.

Is it best to just partion the existing drive? (Its on a mac mini)
