I am fairly proficient with most stuff I use on my mac, but I am quite a latecomer to the WiFi party, as I have just never really needed it yet, and perhaps have neglected that part of my general mac-knowledge.
The thing is I'm getting an iPod Touch for Christmas, and I figured now is the time to at least make some tentative steps into WiFi.
I veer toward the paranoid end of security on my computer, so other than being able to use my new iPod Touch to surf the web etc, I want to know that my WiFi network is as secure as possible. I'll be the only person needing access, with a limited number of machines (my iPod Touch, and my MacBook occasionally).
I currently use my PowerMac and MacBook using wired connections via a gigabit switch, which is in turn hooked up to a wired-only ADSL router/modem/firewall. I'm getting an Airport Express which I plan to hook up to the router (which is in a cupboard on the other side of the room from the computers and the gigabit switch).
With my security-fixation in mind, do I just want to set up the Airport Express's network using:
-WPA2 AES encryption (with a strong password or passphrase, naturally). Will my MacBook and iPod Touch play nice with that? Any issues to be aware of?
-MAC filtering for the iPod Touch and MacBook. Where do I need to set this up? My wired router, or the AirPort Express? Is it easy to add other MAC addresses later if needed (if I was going to add a games console or other computer for instance)?
-Hiding the SSID? Is this part of the set up app?
Is there anything else to do to make it more secure or any sense of confusion or ignorance to any of the above? Apologies if any of this is immediately obvious when you set up an Airport Express, but I don't get either it or the iPod Touch until Christmas Day, so this is forward planning!
Any advice is appreciated.
