I have recently setup a Synology NAS. I have 2 2TB external HDD that I intend to connect to the synology via USB and use strictly for backup. Right now, those drives are NTFS formatted because they were directly connected to my PC. I would like some of the folders that are going to reside on the external drives to be encrypted. I have a couple of ideas but am not sure if they are going to work. I also have a MacBook Pro.
Some questions/ideas are should I reformat the drives to Mac OSX Journaled (or encrypted)? Will the Synology be able to write and read from a Mac formatted drive? Should I create an AES encrypted .dmg disc image to store the folders that I want protected in?
Under the Data Backup section on the Synology DSM help site it says:
An encrypted folder can be backed up either mounted or unmounted. However, it will always be restored as unmounted and will not mount automatically on startup. You will be required to enter or import the encryption key of the encrypted shared folder to mount it.
Backing up an encrypted folder to another encrypted folder is not supported.
The external HDD will have a combination of PC and Mac folders/files so in the event that I need to access them with my PC I would like to have that option if it is possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.
