Security function in PREFS crashes - reset permissions with no effect.

[whipstitch]

If I were to run the disk utility that asks for the CDs that come with the MBP, what will that do? It is a software utility of sorts.

Can I just re-install the basic system files for the OS, or perhaps even just download or copy over from another computer the "Preferences" file? This seems too simplistic, but I am an ex-Windows user.

Help. Don't want to format and re-install or anything of that nature if possible.

What happens if you create a separate account and try to access it there? Does it behave okay? If so, you've probably got a corrupted preference file in your account. With System Preferences closed and in the problem account, go to <your user name>/Library/Preferences and drag the file com.apple.systempreferences.plist to your Desktop. Then open System Preferences and see if you can load the Security pane.

If that doesn't work, there are likely a couple of preferences files in the ByHost folder with your Preferences folder that you can try the same thing with. The files would be called com.apple.systempreferences.<some long number>.plist.

If none of that works, check back here.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately neither seemed to work. When I load prefs, the Security pane leads to a crash when clicked.

Interestingly, I went to Macintosh HD » System » Library » PreferencePanes and was able to open a file called Security.prefPane. This is, indeed, the Security pane. It opens fine when opened individually. So I tried again in Preferences, and it crashes. Any other ideas?

When I bought the MBP, I used a firewire cable to transfer over my Powerbook files UPON STARTUP of the MBP - that is, before it had ever been booted. It asked me, after all, and I wasn't aware of the file transfer tool at the time. Anyway it went from 60 GB down to 7 min remaining, then froze (transferring some 54 GB). I don't know where the rest went. Everything SEEMS in order. But clearly, that's not the case.

Would you recommend re-installing just the OS X Tiger fundamentals? Is that possible from my two gray CDs that came with the MBP?

Mate, did you by chance use any apps that get rid of redundant language files (Monolingual or whatever)? Also, OSX has the option for you to do an Archive & Install which will basically bundle your current system files into a separate folder and then give you a fresh version. It shouldn't delete anything.

Thanks for the info. I think the Archive and Install feature is a great option, however, I have opted to leave it at this.

Since I can run Security from the PreferencePanes folder in the System folder, I am not greatly concerned that Preferences crashes when I open it from there.

My disk permissions, after repairing, notes:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Determining correct file permissions.

The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

Everything appears to be in order. Also, the Apple site says that I may have to re-install some third-party software after Archive and Install. When I first got my MBP and used the Migration Assistant, I had to re-install all of the Adobe Suite software and a few other applications (e.g. StuffIt). Not a huge deal, but time-consuming.

I have this other folder on my HD: "System Folder (from old Mac)." Is this a remnant from the Migration Assistant transfer from the PowerBook, or is this on everyone's new OS X with a MBP? I believe most of the files are for OS 9 (Classic).

Yeah, that's a remnant. You can ditch it if you like.

FWIW, if ever you're wary of deleting a file in OSX, drag it to the Trash but refrain from emptying. The system won't be able to access it so it'll be effectively deleted, but you can still drag it back to where you found it if you realise you did actually need it. Leave it in there for a week or so of normal usage and you should be set.

Hi guys, i want to ask you a similar question.
I have an empy security prefences window when i activate the security prefpane. If i create a new account the security settings show op in the prefpane but only the first time i open it. The second time it is empty and stays that way.

Anyone any ideas?
