Is it just the age of my 2011 MBP that can't cope with latest tech, or did anyone else get this update and it took forever to install, and now their start up time is longer than it used to be?

Am on High Sierra, and I keep getting updates that I've already installed. I am sure I did this when it came up, but am still seeing 2 new updates for stuff I've installed ages ago. iMovie and also iPhoto, that it won't even let me use after I updated OS.
