If you have a current gen MBP or MB (has to be a laptop), and Word 2004, see if you can get the same "issue" I am getting. (BTW, I'm running all the latest updates, and no third party stuff to interfere.)

With your laptop running on the adapter, open a new word document, and switch the view mode to Normal. Go under preferences, and in General, make sure that "Background Repagination" is checked. Close out of word (don't bother saving a document. It won't matter). Open word back up again to a blank document. It should still be in normal view. Go under preferences, and see if "Background Repagination" is checked or not. I'm betting it is not. It should be, and stays checked on iMacs and towers (don't know about minis). With the help of my local Apple store, I reproduced this error on every single one of their laptops.

After a series of lengthy conversations and all kinds of troubleshooting with MS tech, they finally seemed to say that this is a flaw in their software, but are unsure if they will do a patch or not (and were mum on the issue of Office 2008). If you are getting the same issue (pagination option not being remembered between sessions), then please let them know. No point in paying full price for buggy MS software, or for letting this error go unchecked in the new version.

MS's claim is that there is a flaw in the way Word is reading the power settings on new Apple laptops, so that Word always thinks that the computer is running off the battery even if you are plugged in. They claim that Word automatically turns of background repagination to save power when operating in power mode. That's right, folks, it's ... "A Feature!"

To be fair, the MS tech I spoke with on several occasions was very helpful and did his best in tracking this down and offering suggestions. He was great. Now, let's hope the development team comes through as well. I hope the error relates only to this one setting, but if we're talking about Word not accurately interpreting system data, well....
