hello,

i have a lexicon nubus card installed and i'm trying to install the software to go with it.

i've done a bit of research with properly burning a cd-r in attempts to get software to install on this power mac 7100/80. (I understand it's a bit persnickity.) I made many attempts using the disk utility method of creating a disk image of a 'mac os standard' format, and the toast (application) method of creating a temp partition of the same format, taking care to burn the slower 2x speed thru toast.

The drive does mount other vintage cd rom disks.

The old computer has had very few hours of use and the only seeming need it had for good functionality was my replacing of the battery.

I have no way to take the software from the dvd storage medium to a floppy, or i would happily go that route.

If there's a thread that explores a fix, that would be sweet.

Thanks for your time.

Was there any warning saying something like unrecognizable disk format when you inserted the CD? I don't remember if the warning can be disabled. I would check that to make sure it is enabled.

If so, the CD-ROM drive seems to be able to read the disk but the format is wrong.

If not, I would try changing the brand of the CD disk to one which is hopefully more compatible with the CD-ROM drive.

The other cheapest route I can think of right now is an AAUI to RJ45 adapter. It looks like you will also need a Mac that is old enough to run an OS version that is able to communicate with the old Mac OS in your 7100.

I didn't receive any dialog box in response to the failed mounting. The extentions manager is set to the original default for OS 7.5.1. I can't go any higher because the Lexicon maxes out there.

Maybe I'll try to find some old CD-Rs that were at 600-650 megs limit vs these new ones that are 700.

I searched for networking hardware, not knowing whether or not it would connect to my old macbook pro. If I tried to connect another old mac it would seem that i'd run into the same problem (?)

I'm wondering if an external scsi cd-rom drive might be more inclined to mount these disks?

Thanks much for the help. I've been groping in the dark.

I think the 700MB capacity is not a problem. Because I burned my OS 9.1 Install CD using a 700MB Mitsubishi "Blue Platinum" CD-R and my 7100/66AV's CD-ROM drive read it fine.

From this chart: http://www.applefool.com/se30/#afpnetwork
It looks like you need another Mac to run OS 10.1-10.2 or older (except 10.0) in order to communicate with the OS 7.5.1. I'm not sure if the needed networking can be done via a virtual machine (such as SheepShaver running OS 9) using your MBP.

No idea here...
