$1 is not equal to £1, so we actually end up paying more if we don't order import. Factoring in shipping cost, it would still be cheaper wouldn't it?

No, because you may have to pay additional US sales tax, and potentially import duty

Unless you can bring it in yourself and get away with not declaring it you'd have to pay import and handling fees which would negate any saving.

I can think of a few ways to get away with not declaring it, but yes you're right. I suppose after all the additions, it does work out about the same.
