Select External Drive for iTunes Backup

I have a Windows laptop with an internal CDROM to which I have connected an external USB 2.0 DVD Writer. The computer sees the DVD Writer, but iTunes does not give me the option of selecting the DVD Writer when I try to do a backup. I can't find an option in iTunes to specify the backup location. Can anyone tell me how to make iTunes use the external drive?
