select on the tool bar does not give me any options.

I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the w
I have a new mac and I need to use the lasso command for some work I am doing. The select command on the tool bar does not give me the options of the pop down menu. I have dragged the select command over again and no difference. Everything else is great but this is getting urgent. Can anybody help. Probably something simple. Tim
