Selecting Default Application?

Hi,this will probably be a stupid question for most of you but I've just made the switch from Pc's to an Intle iMac.For the most part I'm more than impressed but I'm having a few problems when it comes to installing 3rd party software,I keep getting a window pop up say that I haven't selected a 'Default App'...How do I do this and how do I know which App to use to open programs.Thanks,Andy.

first of all good job buying a mac.
Could you take a screen shot of the error message and upload it. (apple key + shift + 3)
if you go to a file you want to open it click it once and the do a combo (apple key + i) will open a window. In that window look for open with. select you app in the drop down then hit change all. If its not in there select other and look for it there.
