selective iphone backup restore

i got a replacement iphone4 yesterday, and not sure if i want to completely restore from the previous backup.

i'd like SMS and photos restored, but don't want all the other stuff at the moment (all contacts, mail etc is via mobileme so that isn't a problem anyway).

is there any way to do a selective restore? or maybe edit the backup file to remove the stuff i don't want ?
