Self assigning IP Help

I have an old PowerBook g4, with leopard, and every time I try and connect to the Internet, I am unable to do so. When I look at the network settings, it says that I am connected but with a self assigned ip that may not work. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Thanks!!

thanks for the link! Updating to 10.5.6 broke the desktop's ability to get an IP, can't even connect to the router via a browser!

I'll be trying this tomorrow night when I'm not so tired and cranky.
