I've had my 2010 15" MacBook Pro for around nine months (see specs in my signature). It has served me well in that time and I have kept it in excellent condition. However, I'm considering selling it in order to buy a 2011 MacBook Air 13" and Apple Thunderbolt Display. I don't do high-end gaming or intense video work. From what I've seen, a new MBA would be just as fast as my current MBP. I'd be able to carry the MBA to school more easily and I'd have a larger screen to work on at home. In order to save money I'd buy the MBA and TB Display as Apple refurbished (saves about 15%) Here are my intended costs:

+$1700 for used MBP
+$100 for used HDTV (TB Display would replace it)
-$1520 for MBA (tax included)
-$890 for TB Display (tax included)
-$100 in accessory costs
=
-$710

So, based on my best estimates the transaction would leave me $710 worse off. Based on this information, do you think it's worthwhile to sell my existing MacBook Pro and buy a MacBook Air and Thunderbolt Display?

Yes. Seems like a good idea, esp. for your situation.

Where are you getting $1,700 for a 2010 MBP? My 2011 probably would get that, now if you have an 256GB+ SSD I could see that price being more realistic.

I do have an SSD. It's basically as high end as you go for a 2010 MBP (with anti-glare screen) and it's in near-perfect condition.
